18mm ECW Prince Rupert's Regiment of Foot

After the red-coated King's Lifeguard I wanted to add a blue-coated regiment, and Prince Rupert's Regiment of Foot fitted the bill nicely:

Prince Rupert's Regiment also has an interesting flag, at least compared with some of the other rather plain flags carried by other regiments. The flag is again from Maverick models, and the figures are all Eureka miniatures:

I have the man himself along with his dog, Boy, and will be doing them both at a later stage when I get to the command figures. I have settled on eight elements of shotte with four of pike (including the command stand) as a standard configuration but will be doing a few spare elements of pike for the Royalists to bolster their regiments as required:

I was originally going to do six regiments of Royalists and the same for the Parliamentary army, but now have plans to expand these to eight each which will mean around four hundred foot figures for each army. Nothing like a bit of project creep when the project has barely commenced, but I am enjoying painting these figures so much that I am hoping the eight hundred foot figures will be achievable. I also have six regiments of horse of eighteen figures each planned for each side.

There is a bit of a shine on these figures in some of the above pictures which thankfully is not apparent to the naked eye after my usual two coats of Dullcote. The pikemen at the rear in the picture below are probably more representative of the blue I used for these:

That's two regiments done now, with the third nearing completion.

    1. Thanks Richard. There is quite a variety of poses in the Eureka ECW range which makes them enjoyable to paint.

  2. More "baddies" Lawrence....I am hoping for a Parliamentarian unit next?! 😏 Needless to say, despite representing the wrong cause, they are nice figures with a lovely paint job!

    1. Thanks Keith. I'll be doing the Royalist side first before turning my mind to the Parliamentarian side just to keep things straight in my head.

    1. After briefly returning to complete the medieval Germans I think I'll stay with the ECW for a while Matt as I am thoroughly enjoying the change of pace. It is quite fun looking up information on all the regiments, especially as I only had a vague idea about them before I started.

    1. Thanks Jonathan. The basing tends to slow me down a bit and I have to be patient with it so I don't rush it and end up trashing the unit.

  5. Great looking regiment. It's so easy to add just one more regiment....

    1. Or two. I just hope I'm not building too big a mountain to climb, but eight regiments a side should allow for more substantial games.

    2. Eight foot regiments per side is a good number to target. I rarely get more than that out and onto the field.

    3. That's great to know, thanks Jonathan. Six did not feel enough, but eight feels about right plus that number will fit just nicely in my storage boxes.

  6. I almost stopped reading at 800 miniatures. Madness! Then I did stop reading at ‘but I enjoy painting these so much..’. More Madness! 😀
Miniatures look good and good luck with your crazy goals. It will be quite the collection when all is done though and most impressive. 😀

    1. Cheers Stew. Actually, reading it back like that, it does seem a little mad. I will have a big grin if I manage to get there though.

  7. Another awesome regiment with a lovely flag, I'm just short artillery and then can call them done, of course if I add a few more cuirassiers units and change the flags, I can do 30 years war and maybe Polish winged hussars? I've actually still got Montrose's army in a box, it's just all that tartan!

    1. Thanks Iain. I have a Minifigs Montrose army in a box as well. I'm not sure when I'll get around to to them, but know that if and when I do they will be dwarfed by these figures.

    1. Thanks Ray, I needed a blue unit or two to break up what will be a large number of red.

  9. Beautiful unit, Lawrence. I might have made that (very unique) flag of Rupert's regiment a bit larger? The big, bold designs of the ECW flags add a needed bit of color to the tabletop!

My original Minifigs ECW armies had 4 regiments of 40 Foote each, plus 2 half strength units of less well equipped troops, and 4 units of cavalry of roughly 18 figures each. In recent years, I use only 20 figures so each of the originals can serve as 2 units in most cases (with some flexibility for pike or shot heavy units) The Old recent Old Glory additions have added another 3 20-figure Foote and 4 six figure Horse to those totals, plus some additional command and artillery figures, plus now the Scots. That should be more than enough, with similar totals to your "mad" plans!

Megalomania runs in our hobby, especially us bloggers! :-)

    1. Thanks Peter. Maverick models do offer a service to increase or decrease flags. This is their standard size which has always looked on large when I have used them on other miniatures such as the Eureka Samurai. They are relatively inexpensive though so I may end up upsizing them in the future, but will see how they look en masse.

Thanks for the information on your armies. It has put my mind at rest that what I have settled on will be workable. I have a Scottish Covenanter army in the pile as well, but will settle on six regiments for them I think.

    2. My own Scots, now well along towards completion (film at eleven) will have 8 Foote regiments of 20 each, 4 Highlanders of 4 each, 2 Dragoons of 10 each, 4 cavalry of 6 each, and about 6 Artillery, plus command. That should be more than I am likely to ever need.

    3. That sounds like a decent force as you say Peter. I'm going to do a few spare elements of pike for each army so I can break up the 48 figure regiments into smaller units if required. It will be interesting to see if my current enthusiasm has started to wane by the time I get to the Scots though.
