15mm Italian Allied Cavalry

I finally got there! The last of the 15mm Republican Romans in the form of eight elements of Italian allied cavalry:

These will help bolster the cavalry numbers in future battles when required, although they are rated as "Inferior" and will therefore be much more brittle than the "Ordinary" Roman cavalry:

Nice enough figures, although I did find that a few of them sat awkwardly on their mounts. After what must be close to 800 figures in this project though, I was just happy to have completed them:

I have a few bits and pieces to clear from the painting queue, and then I'll put my mind to which army to next drag off the lead pile, hopefully before the end of 2020. At least that way I can feel as though I got stuck into three projects this year, rather than having spent the bulk of the year just painting Romans!

  1. Beautiful work! You managed all of since your last post three days again? A miracle. Painting 800 Romans is a handsome sum for the year. A great accomplishment! I wonder what will be next?

    1. Thanks Jonathan. I had started on them a bit before the last post, so they have taken a week. I'll finish the odds and ends and then have a good think about the next project.

  2. 800 plus figures is a stellar achievement Lawrence, well done on completing this project. All the mini Romans and their friends look great too.

    1. Thanks Keith. It turned into a bit of a slog, but I wanted to keep going until I reached the end as I feared it would take me several years to get back to it if I didn't.

  3. I agree with those who posted above- getting 800 figures done is very impressive; and very well painted too.

    1. Cheers Codsticker. I'll assemble them for a group shot and do a final count to see how close to that estimate I actually ended up.

  4. Nothing 'just painting Romans' about these (or any of the others), what a stupendous army it must be all assembled. A great sense of achievement, most well deserved. It's wonderful to view them here, let alone in the 'flesh'.

    1. Thanks for that. I'm one of those who is not overly bothered, although I take your point.

  8. Very nice Cavalry, Lawrence.
I would think the Allied cavalry would be if anything better rated than the Romans themselves! There were trice as many of them, and one suspects they were better horsemen as well. Maybe motivation was higher for the actual Romans... and maybe not!

800 figures of Romans in one year! I think that calls for a Triumph!
Riding in a chariot, the laurel wreath held above your head.... and the obligatory slave murmuring various "Sic transit gloria mundi"'s in your ear! :-)

    1. Thanks Peter. I do find some of the ratings in DBMM a little arbitrary and, as you say, rating the Republican Roman cavalry prowess above their Italian allies is one of them.

It has been a productive year, but I'm reserving any feelings of triumph until the final count next week.
