The project gives me enough options for the DBMM early and late Carthaginian lists, spanning just over four hundred years of history, so there are figures here that will never actually be deployed on the table together. The term "army" is therefore probably a bit of a misnomer, but nevertheless I thought I'd assemble them for the sake of posterity.
Here are some early citizen militia based as auxilia, with the Poeni cavalry and Libyan heavy chariots immediately behind:
A close-up of the Sacred Band on the opposite flank:
With Carthaginian generals and chariots behind them:
A closer view of some of the elephants, which I thoroughly enjoyed putting together:
Some Libyan skirmishers:
With early Libyan spearmen behind them, followed by the veteran Libyan spearmen and city militia:
An overview of the entire assemblage:
The project took around three and a half months, and was comprised of the following:
12 Libyan javelinmen skirmish stands
18 Libyan spearmen elements
18 veteran Libyan spearmen elements
7 cavalry elements (including 3 generals)
8 Sacred Band elements
12 city militia spearmen elements
8 city militia auxilia elements
5 command personality stands
10 elephants
8 heavy chariots
2 bolt-shooter artillery pieces
All up that is 363 foot and cavalry figures, 53 horses, 10 elephants, 8 chariots and 2 artillery pieces.
Next up I have a few 15mm wagons to complete, and then I'm hoping to get stuck into some more 15mm Numidians I have prepared and which are next in line in the queue.
Wow! Your Carthaginian Army is an impressive body of work. The long lines of elephants and chariots are particularly striking.
ReplyDeleteWell done!
Thanks Jonathan. The elephants and chariots were the figures I most pleased with in the final analysis.
DeleteAgree with Jonathan, the combo Elephants/chariots is awesome...and I do like your splendid Libyan skirmishers as well!
ReplyDeleteCheers Phil. The Xyston Libyan skirmishers do look particularly fierce!
DeleteThey look great en masse. The shields add a ton of colour.
ReplyDeleteThanks Codsticker. LBMS decals were worth the effort, once I had figured out how to apply them properly.
DeleteI love a finished army on parade - you must be very chuffed!
ReplyDeleteGood idea to paint up an "all options" force. Nicely done Sir, enjoy gaming with them!
Best wishes,
Jeremy
Thanks Jeremy. I'm looking forward to giving the early Carthaginians a run in the New Year, although some of their opponents around that time look quite difficult and I know they'll be up against it.
DeleteFantastic job. I'm very envious of how nicely that has turned out, but I have never actually managed to get a Later Carthaginian army to work for me.
ReplyDeleteCheers Doug. My loss to win ratio with them so far is two to one, and I always feel as though they look better on paper than they perform on the table. One of the issue is the elephants, in that I always end up putting at least two or three in the list which ties up quite a few points but they are just so easy for an opponent to avoid, or to throw some psiloi up against.
DeleteSpectacular work Lawrence, they look absolutely fabulous! Nice to see a decent sized army instead of these skirmish games that keep popping up everywhere! :) And great idea to do all the options too, makes a heap of sense :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark. The additional variety also helped keep t6he interest levels up, as it felt a bit like tackling two projects at the same time!
DeleteFabulous looking army, smart work to build it to cover such a large period too! Got to love all the elephants and chariots!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks Iain. The elephants are my favourite, and I have managed a couple of games with them now but have yet to master how to use them properly. I have field seven and three in the two separate games, and only managed to actually get one into contact (although he did quite well when he finally got there).
DeleteVery impressive indeed!
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray, another one ticked off the list for the year!
DeleteA superb looking army all around, Lawrence!
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter. I had been working toward this one with the Gauls and Spanish, so it was nice to complete it within the same year as the other two.
DeleteI love a good parade. Great work Lawrence!
ReplyDeleteThanks Mark. I must admit I derive quite a lot of satisfaction when I go back and look at the finished projects a year or two down the track.
DeleteVery impressive. Love the whole effect and love the shields especially
ReplyDeleteThanks Mellis, much appreciated.
